Jake Hitch
DPhil student
Jake began his DPhil in Population Health in October 2023 within the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC). He is supervised by Dr Koen Pouwels and Professors Tim Walsh and Daniela De Angelis. His DPhil project is funded by the INEOS Oxbridge Doctoral Initiative on AMR, administered through Oxford Population Health.
The overall aim of his DPhil research is to quantify the health-economic burden of antibiotic-resistant neonatal sepsis in low- and middle-income countries. More specifically, he will estimate socioeconomic inequalities in incidence and outcomes and investigate the extent to which these can be explained by socioeconomic disparities in access to appropriate antibiotics. He also plans to develop new evidence on the cost-effectiveness of interventions such as vaccination in terms of both their effects on population health and inequalities.
Prior to joining Oxford Population Health, Jake worked as an Economist at the Office of Health Economics (OHE), a health economics and health policy research organisation. In his role Jake worked on a wide variety of consulting and funded research projects, analysing data and producing reports on topics ranging from the valuation of child and adolescent health-related quality of life to sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry. At OHE, Jake also developed expertise in the design of discrete choice experiments, data visualisation, and methods for the economic evaluation of new medicines.
Jake holds MRes and BSc degrees in Economics from the University of Bristol.
