The Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU) specialises in large-scale and collaborative studies of lifestyle and genetic risk factors for cancer, and for other common diseases of adult life such as heart disease, fractures and dementia. The unit aims to provide reliable evidence to help answer questions about public health, and the health of individuals.

Despite improvements in survival in recent decades, cancer remains a major cause of death. The most common types of cancer in males are lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and stomach cancer, and in females, are breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and cervical cancer.
