The Festival of Global Health was launched in Autumn 2023. We hosted six events during the 2023/24 academic year covering a wide range of topics relevant to global health. At each event, we screened a film followed by a panel discussion including film makers and academic experts and finish with a social event. Over 500 people have attended the events in total.

The Festival of Global Health is continuing in the 2024/25 academic year. We plan on hosting four events during year, starting with Human Forever. See further details below.

 past events

We started with The Cancer Conflict, exploring issues around patient autonomy, and the role of misinformation and disinformation in influencing choices people diagnosed with cancer make about their care. El Susto follows the interplay of industry, policy and health in tackling the diabetes and obesity crisis in Mexico. Lovesick is a wonderfully poignant documentary exploring the stigma surrounding patients diagnosed with HIV in India, and the work of Dr Suniti Solomon, a pioneer in delivery of HIV care in the subcontinent.

We discussed the impact of diet on health, and the factors that influence the choices people make about food they eat with the screening I Could Never Go Vegan, and provided entirely plant based catering for the social event. The penultimate event of the year was about the rising threat of global antimicrobial resistance with the screening of Silent Pandemic, and  was followed by a discussion about how to tackle urgent need for coordinated action to tackle the challenge. Our final event of the year was a screening of Survivors, a documentary that was filmed during the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone in 2014, following the lived experience of a street kid, ambulance driver and nurse through the epidemic.
