A study of tissue response to the wear particles of artificial joints
Wilson D.
A study of twenty reoperated total hip replacement cases showed that a certain amount of metallic and acrylic debris was to be found in all; that the presence of an acute inflammatory response appeared to correlate best to the presence of infection; that polyethylene debris excited a granulomatous tissue response in the one case in which such debris was identified; and finally, that no carcinogenic effect of the particulate debris was observed.
