DPhil Student

Miriam joined the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC) in 2024 as a DPhil student in Population Health. She works under the supervision of Senior Researcher Filipa Landeiro (HERC), Professor José Leal (HERC), Professor Gail Hayward (NDPCHS) and Professor Martin Knapp (LSE). Her DPhil research aims to investigate the impact of living alone on health and social care service use, health and social care cost, health-related quality of life, and health inequities in patients with dementia from the UK, particularly in Black, Asian, or other Minority Ethnic groups.

Miriam has been awarded a full scholarship to support her studies by the NIHR Three Schools’ Dementia Research Programme Doctoral Studentship and the Department of Population Health Studentship.

Prior to her DPhil, Miriam was a lecturer on ageing and health psychology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and worked as a licensed psychotherapist. She has also worked as a researcher on projects focused on mental health, ageing, dementia, health promotion, and psychosocial determinants of health. In 2017, she founded “65+, Active Ageing”, a pioneering social initiative in Peru that for seven years worked to raise awareness of mental health and ageing through social media, workshops, talks and conferences. Miriam also holds a BSc in Clinical Psychology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and an MA in Gerontology from the University of Granada.
