Bastian joined the Clinical Trial Service Unit & Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU) in October 2021 as a DPhil student in Population Health.
His DPhil research investigates the associations between adiposity and the risk of severe respiratory infections, using both primary care from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink and prospective data from the UK Biobank. Bastian is supervised by Associate Professor Ben Lacey, Professor Sarah Lewington and Dr Sofia Massa and his research is funded by a Oxford Population Health Scholarship.
Prior to his doctoral studies, Bastian graduated with an MSc in Global Health Science and Epidemiology from the University of Oxford in 2021, an MSc in Health Economics and International Health Policy from the London School of Economics in 2020, and a BSc in Economics from Goethe University Frankfurt in 2019.
Alongside his research, Bastian is passionate about health poverty and social inequality and is a keen musician, who can often be found singing or playing the organ in one of Oxford’s beautiful chapels.
