Abednego joined the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) and Somerville College in October 2022 as a DPhil student in Population Health. His research explores the global molecular epidemiology of HIV between 1990 and 2022/25. Abednego is co-supervised by Dr Joris Hemelaar and Professor Philippe Guérin.

Prior to Oxford, Abednego graduated with a BSc (Hon) in Medical Laboratory Science and Technology (University of Nairobi, Kenya) and a Master's degree in Public Health (Hacettepe University, Turkey). Abednego has worked in Turkey, where he helped build the capacity of a specialised medical team to carry out health interventions in disasters and emergencies under the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC). He has also worked in the clinical laboratory, monitoring patients' outcomes.
