More Gaps Than Evidence: Science Advice for Government and the Public During Ontario's COVID-19 Crisis
Professor Peter Jüni
Tuesday, 15 October 2024, 1pm to 2pm
Richard Doll Lecture Theatre
In June 2020, Peter was asked to help establish and to lead the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, which advised Canada’s largest province, home to 14.7 million people, on its pandemic response. He will reflect on the challenges of informing the public and advising Ontario’s conservative government, which held sole responsibility for the pandemic response without national involvement. He will discuss key moments, difficulties, and lessons learned in bridging the gap between science and policy amid rapidly changing circumstances.
Peter is a Swiss general internist and epidemiologist, and a Professor of Medicine and Clinical Trials at the Nuffield Department of Population Health. His research focuses on methodological issues, clinical trials, and meta-analyses in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disorders. He previously served as Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Toronto from 2016 to 2022 and led the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table during the pandemic.
