Understanding the relationship between surgical specialisation and outcomes following surgery for colorectal cancer
Project reference number - 0018
Principal Investigators - Rebecca Birch and John Taylor, University of Leeds
Plain language summary - This work will look at the link between colorectal cancer 'specialisation' and the patient outcomes achieved by surgeons. It will look at the level of a surgeon's specialisation (for example, number of operations performed in a year; membership of a professional body) and outcomes such as return to theatre due to complications and deaths within 30 days of surgery. Results will be compared for specialist and non-specialist surgeons, emergency and planned procedures. The work will look at how levels of specialisation and outcomes vary across the country, and whether these have changed over time.
