Diabetes complications and their relationship with outcomes from colorectal cancer

Plain Language summary: Up to 20% of cancer patients also have diabetes.  Having diabetes is known to be linked with worse outcomes for patients after colorectal cancer surgery. Patients who have other health conditions related to their diabetes (complications) have more frequent visits to the health service, and a lower life expectancy. Despite this, little is known about the link between these complications and colorectal cancer care outcomes.

This study aims to look at whether there is a link between diabetes, its related complications, and patient outcomes, after a diagnosis of bowel cancer in the English population. The study will be split into two parts. The first part will look at how diabetes, and its related complications, are measured using healthcare data, and how these measures might predict the associated increased risk. The second part will look in greater detail at the relationship between specific complications of diabetes and colorectal cancer outcomes.
