  • 1 December 2025 to 31 March 2026
  • Project No: MSP008
  • Student Research Projects 2026
  • Health Economics Research Centre (HERC)

Summary

The student will work on updating the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC) online database of mapping studies of patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) instruments. The database is used in a large number of NICE appraisals to inform models that are used to decide which treatments are made available to NHS patients. The project involves performing a systematic review of published studies that conducted statistical mapping to predict EQ-5D utilities or responses from any PROMs instrument and reported the estimated algorithms in sufficient detail to allow other researchers to use them to predict EQ-5D. Medline (via PubMed) will be searched starting from February 2025 to the period of commencing the project. The search can be supplemented by EuroQoL Reference SearchCRD database and the HESG website, as done in the 2013, 2016 and 2017 updates of the database. To date, the original searches conducted in December 2012 were updated nine times between July 2013 and February 2025. The student will extract data from included studies on sample size, modelling methods, disease area and patient population, citation details and PROMs instruments that are mapped. Descriptive statists analyses will be performed. In addition, the student will perform a quantitative analysis, e.g., assessing the mapping model performance by using Q2, the proportional reduction in error, which has been proposed as an alternative metric for assessing prediction accuracy in any model predicting a continuous outcome; or the student could suggest an alternative analysis of interest to be considered by supervisors. The project will result in an update of the HERC database of mapping studies, and the student will contribute to a manuscript to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
