Michael Turner
Academic Clinical Lecturer
BA(Hons) BMBCh MSc DPhil MRCP(UK) AFHEA
Michael studied Medicine in Oxford and has undertaken postgraduate training in Manchester and the Thames Valley. He completed an MSc in Global Health Science between core and specialty training and took time out from general (internal) medicine and renal medicine specialty training to complete a DPhil in Population Health Science.
Michael’s DPhil examined the genetics of blood pressure in the Mexico City Prospective Study (MCPS) of 150 000 adults. He explored haplotype-based methods to describe the complex population structure in MCPS and then examined the genetic determinants (through genome-wide association studies) and consequences (through Mendelian randomisation studies) of elevated blood pressure.
During his clinical lectureship, Michael hopes to build on his previous work and examine the role that major risk factors play in multi-morbidity in MCPS, explore the causes and consequences of kidney disease in MCPS, and gain experience in the clinical trials that the department leads. He is experienced in teaching epidemiology and statistical coding to MSc and clinical medical students.
