Jiani Yan

Jiani Yan is a computational health scientist at the Demographic Science Unit (DSU), part of Oxford Population Health, and at the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science.

Her research asks how social conditions shape health across populations, with a particular focus on mortality and multimorbidity, and how machine learning and explainable AI can be brought into demographic and epidemiological questions without giving up interpretability. Her methodological range runs from deep and machine learning through explainable AI to measurement modelling, and she works across linked longitudinal surveys, population biobanks, and large-scale administrative registers. A second strand of her work concerns model uncertainty and robustness: how sensitive findings are to the choices researchers make, and how to build tools that make that sensitivity visible.
