Summary
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has been declared as one of the top threats to global public health and development by the WHO. Asia is considered the epicentre of AMR, with an estimated 335,000 dying as a direct result of it in 2021. In Malaysia and Pakistan, it presents an unprecedented challenge to the function of healthcare systems, as it is among the top five causes of death. The purpose of this project is to assess the feasibility of a One Health surveillance system in both countries. The study adopts a mixed methods study design, wherein qualitative and quantitative forms of data collection are conducted concurrently. The qualitative component of the study consists of a desk review, individual interviews and focus group discussions with key informants. Meanwhile, the quantitative component of the study involves a survey of stakeholders involved in the surveillance and control of AMR in both countries. Findings generated from the mixed methods study will be used to inform the development of a series of workshops with potential implementers, who will take actions to implement the AMR One Health Surveillance system within their country.
