The Centre on Population Approaches for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention (CPNP) is one of several research centres and units within the Nuffield Department of Population Health of the University of Oxford, and is located within the Big Data Institute on the Old Road Campus in Headington, Oxford.

The aim of the CPNP is to carry out research and engage in other activities that influence public health policy and practice as it relates to population approaches for the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Most of our work focuses on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but our work relates to other NCDs including cancer, liver cirrhosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The CPNP is involved in a range of different projects involving the modelling and evaluation of population approaches to the promotion of healthy and sustainable diets. We also have a broader interest in the implementation of initiatives aimed at preventing NCDs. Further details of the CPNP’s research projects can be found here and further information about its teaching and advocacy projects here.

The CPNP currently receives funding from the British Heart Foundation, the National Institute of Health Research, the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council. The CPNP does not seek or accept funding from food manufacturers and retailers, or from pharmaceutical, alcohol or tobacco companies.

In 2013 the CPNP was recognised as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Population Approaches for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention.  Further details of the CPNP’s work as a collaborating centre can be found here.
