Counting the dead: nationwide studies of premature mortality
Professor Prabhat Jha
Richard Doll Seminars
Tuesday, 02 May 2023, 1pm to 2pm
Richard Doll Lecture Theatre, Richard Doll Building, Old Road Campus, OX3 7LF
Most deaths in LMICs lack medical attention at the time of death so their causes are unknown. Using studies from Asia and Africa, Prof. Jha will discuss the desirability and means of obtaining national cause of death data where death registration is uncommon, and outline how reliable mortality data informs risk factor epidemiology and disease control priorities and programs.
Prabhat Jha is University Professor and Canada Research Chair in Global Health at the University of Toronto. He completed his DPhil from Magdalen College under the late Dame Valerie Beral and has worked for many years at the World Bank and WHO.
