Researcher in Health Economics
Surya is a researcher at the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC), University of Oxford. Her main interests are related to economic and policy evaluations. Surya’s current research includes a project for the Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group investigating the impact of transitioning to community-based diabetes care and promoting health education for self-management; and a study in asthma assessing a hand-held device for predicting exacerbations.
Prior to her current position, Surya undertook research at Imperial College London supporting the economic evaluation of Population Effects of Antiretroviral Therapy (PopART HPTN 071). She has also worked as a consultant for The Global Fund where she conducted a review of the micro-economic benefits of public health interventions related to HIV, malaria and TB.
She received her PhD in Health Economics at Imperial College London. She holds a Masters of Public Health from Imperial College and an undergraduate degree in Biology and Public Policy from University of California, Berkeley. Her PhD thesis investigated the impacts of workplace breastfeeding policies in the US on health and economic outcomes including breastfeeding rates, employee absenteeism and the gender wage gap using quasi-experimental methods and panel data.
