Data Management Group Lead

Mike Thorn joined the UK Biobank as Data Management Group Lead in March 2021. He is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to streamline data-management processes, ensuring that data are processed, uploaded, curated, and disseminated to researchers in an appropriate and timely manner.
Mike’s background is in IT management and software support and development, primarily the Oracle technology stack and geospatial PostgreSQL databases. He worked in the University’s central IT Services from 2006 to 2015, where his ultimate post was Head of Systems Support and Maintenance. He was responsible for the IT support and development of business systems such as Oracle Financials, DARS, SITS, GSS, and OxCort. In January 2015, he joined the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) as Programme Manager under the leadership of Professor Peter Gething. Mike ran a team of technical staff, responsible for the gathering and curation of geospatial data to support the geospatial modelling of global malaria burden. Mike also had a short period as technical consultant to the Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) project, led by Dr Catrin Moore. Mike was responsible for developing a geospatially capable PostgreSQL database to store antimicrobial resistance data.
