Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an incurable condition that causes breathing difficulties due to lung damage. Earlier diagnosis would allow more to be done to prevent the condition worsening and would enable access to new treatments, giving patients a better chance of living a longer, more active life. The challenges of performing spirometry, the standard diagnostic test for COPD, contribute to missed or late diagnoses. Spirometry requires patients to blow hard and fast into a machine that measures lung capacity, which many people find difficult. It is also time‑consuming and must be carried out by a trained healthcare professional, placing additional pressure on GP surgeries.

TidalSense has developed an easy‑to‑use, CE‑marked device called N‑Tidal, which allows patients to breathe normally rather than perform forced manoeuvres.

The CORMORANT study will investigate the accuracy of COPD diagnosis using N‑Tidal Diagnose compared with standard spirometry in primary care.

A model‑based cost‑effectiveness analysis will be undertaken.
