In 2016 the University of Oxford and the MRC created a new strategic alliance, the MRC Population Health Research Unit at the University of Oxford (MRC PHRU), to capitalise on new opportunities for epidemiological research in chronic disease. The unit is hosted by the CTSU and its research focuses on cardiovascular and metabolic disease (especially diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease). Its large scale observational studies, randomised trials and meta analyses are underpinned by methodological innovation in computing and laboratory science.
