Opium as a carcinogen: new insights from the Golestan Cohort Study

In September 2020, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that opium consumption causes cancer in humans - a conclusion drawn after reviewing data from five decades of research. Given the widespread use of opium and its derivatives by millions of people across the world, this classification has important public health ramifications. In this seminar, Professor Malezadeh will talk about opium as a carcinogen and present results from the Golestan cohort in Northern Iran.

Professor Malekzadeh is distinguished professor of medicine and founder of the digestive disease research Institute at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He has been chancellor of Shiraz University, Minister of Health and Medical Education, and secretary of the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences. He received the IARC/WHO Medal of Honour in 2018 for his study of upper GI cancer in the Golestan cohort.
