The Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaires

The PDQ-39 Revisited 

In the nineties researchers in the Health Services Research Unit developed the 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) to assess the impact of Parkinson’s disease on health-related quality of life. A review of the PDQ-39 suggested the items and wording are as relevant today as they were when the measure was developed. However, we are taking this opportunity to explore the development of optional modules that could be adopted in trials aimed at specific aspects of the disease.

A series of 20 interviews with people with Parkinson’s (PwP) generated 28 new questions related to issues concerning sleep, exercise and medication. The questions were tested in a further group of PwP to ensure that they were acceptable. A new PDQ-Exercise measure has been developed and a paper is due to be published in 2020

The Parkinson's Disease Carer Questionnaire (PDQ-Carer)

The PDQ-Carer is a 29-item measure of health related quality of life for use with carers of people with Parkinson’s disease (PwP). It was originally designed and validated for pen and paper completion, but has been transferred to electronic format for use on personal computers, laptops, tablet computers and smart phones. Through a small number of interviews with carers for PwP we have confirmed that the electronic PDQ-Carer can be used effectively on these devices.

An online survey was conducted with carers in the spring of 2019 to allow us to identify whether the PDQ-Carer can pick up changes in how people’s caring role might be affecting them. The analysis is underway and the results will be made available on this website in due course.
