Should sentinel lymph node biopsy be performed before or after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy?

Advances continue to be made in the management of breast cancer. Sentinel Lymph node biopsy is now considered the operation of choice for staging the axilla and Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is utilised more and more in the management of breast cancer in an attempt to downsize the cancer prior to surgery. It remains unclear as to the order in which these treatments should be performed, both having advantages and disadvantages. Current practice seems to favour sentinel lymph node biopsy prior to Neoadjuvant chemotherapy however there are a small number of studies suggesting sentinel lymph node biopsy is both safe and accurate post Neoadjuvant chemotherapy. © 2010 Rila Publications Ltd.
