Examination of the hip using ultrasound is described with anatomical correlation. Thirty patients with painful hips were examined; an effusion was detected in 16. Aspiration of the hip joint in 15 patients confirmed the ultrasound findings; there were no false positives or false negatives. In at least 12 patients the management was significantly influenced by the results of ultrasound examination. © 1984 Royal College of Radiologists.
