Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has recently embarked on system-wide changes to the way it funds medical research. These changes have involved replacing several major funding schemes with new schemes designed to improve opportunities for talented researchers at all career stages, encourage innovation and creativity, and reduce the burden of application and peer review on the research sector.

Professor Kelso will provide an overview of why change was required, the process of planning and implementation, and the potential outcomes for the research environment in Australia. She will also outline how these and other reforms are expected to shift research incentives and promote greater diversity in the Australian medical research community.
